Decarbonisation, explained: from measurement to reduction

Measurement tells you where you stand. Decarbonisation is what you do about it: the deliberate, tracked reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions behind your operations, energy use and value chain.
Why measurement comes first
Reduction without measurement is guesswork. A baseline inventory shows which sources actually matter — and the answer is often surprising. A company convinced its problem is the vehicle fleet frequently discovers that purchased electricity, or a single energy-hungry site, dominates the footprint. Cutting emissions where they are not concentrated wastes effort; the baseline points the effort where it counts.
The usual sequence
Most organisations decarbonise in a recognisable order. First, efficiency: the same output with less energy — better equipment, better controls, less waste. Second, energy sourcing: switching purchased electricity to lower-carbon supply. Third, electrification: replacing fuel-burning equipment and vehicles with electric alternatives. Fourth, the value chain: working with suppliers, since for most businesses Scope 3 is the largest share and the slowest to move.
What good tracking looks like
A reduction claim is only as strong as its measurement. That means comparing like with like: the same boundaries, consistent methods, and a record of which emission factor edition each year used — so a change in the number reflects a change in reality, not a change in arithmetic.
Where to begin
Establish the baseline, find your largest sources, and pick the one intervention with the clearest payback. Decarbonisation is a programme, not a project — but it starts with a single, well-measured step.
